About Spiritual Direction
What is Spiritual Direction? How Does it Differ From Counseling?
Spiritual direction is listening deeply to another, while simultaneously listening to the Holy Spirit. Out of this act of deep and attentive listening, questions are offered to the directee so they can notice the work of God in their life, and grow in their relationship with Him.
Spiritual direction differs from clinical counseling in that counseling aims to use advice and other techniques to solve specific issues in one's life. Spiritual Direction differs from pastoral counseling in that pastoral counseling also begins with a specific problem or difficulty to address, and uses faith based teaching and discipleship to tackle the issue. While problems will be discussed and many times resolved through spiritual direction, that’s more of a byproduct of the ministry. At its core, spiritual direction is attentive listening to the directee and Spirit, allowing God to reveal what He wants to the directee, as well as when and how He wants to reveal it. Out of this noticing, the directee responds to the loving voice of the Lord during and in between sessions, resulting in deeper peace, an increased awareness of God’s presence in daily living, healing, and the ability to listen to God’s voice above other voices and influences.
In addition to Spiritual Direction, the director of Rivendell has experience in pastoral counseling and leadership coaching. If desired, the director is happy to wear several different hats during a session; please communicate what you desire out of your sessions as the director is happy to tailor your sessions to meet your needs and desires.
Sessions will be held monthly for one hour unless specific life circumstances deem a more frequent meeting rhythm.
